On 27th February, 2021, a team of 4 Erasito Staff consisting of Altaf Shah, Taukave Mua, Tulia Katafono and myself represented the Company at the ‘Nabukalou Creek Clean Up’ event. This event was jointly organised by Suva City Council (SCC) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). There were a number companies and organisations that joined hands in this cause which was undertaken over a span of 2 hours from 9 – 11am.
Participants had an option of collecting waste from the edges or inside of Nabukalou creek. Team ECL chose to collect rubbish from the edge of creek as we were equipped with closed shoes, gloves, hats, glasses and hand sanitzer. The USP canoe team was tasked with collecting rubbish from within the water.
It was quite shocking for us to observe at first-hand, the type of waste that has been disposed of in the creek. Overtime, this has given rise to poor water quality. The waste was sorted at four collection points according to its category: plastic, metal, styrofoam, glass, paper/wood and others. IUCN experts had weighed the rubbish to determine the amount of waste materials that had been collected from Nabukalou creek.
We were alarmed with the register of a tonne of waste collected from the Creek. The plastic waste that was found to be most prevalent which weighed over 394kg,. This was followed by metal 187.3kg, paper/wood 40.27kg and glass at 81.5kg. We were delighted to have been part of the ‘Nabukalou Creek Clean Up’ campaign and we look forward to contributing to society with similar activities of this nature in the near future.
