The Association for Overseas Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Partnerships (AOTS) through the Fiji Commerce & Employers had sent out invitations to applicants in Fiji to attend a virtual course on Occupational Safety and Health Management (OSH) and Work Environment Improvement. There were 21 participants from 19 countries. I was fortunate to be invited as one of the three participants from Fiji. It was a 2 day course per week over a span of 9 weeks which focused on Ergonomics in the workplace.
The course elaborated on the benefits of low cost workplace improvements such as materials handling and storage, workstation design, teamwork environment, infection prevention measures in the workplace, improvements for better work and productivity. It was a very informative and engaging course where the facilitators encouraged group discussions. This was the most interesting part of the session where each participant got to share their thoughts and ideas on various subject matters which were later presented at the end of each session.
This training has not only broadened my knowledge on improving safety, health and working conditions (specially working in a high risk environment such as road surveys, construction and under water inspections), I also made some good friends for life.
